The company will take care of the transfer to other sectors
The Port of Malaga, together with Buran Energy, has presented the project called Digital H2 Green. This project has been submitted to the call of the European Green Pact funded under the Horizon 2020 program to propose the design and implementation of a smart grid linked to renewable hydrogen and ammonia in the port area.
This consortium will work together to improve the energy efficiency of the third cruise tourism port on the peninsula. This proposal for distributed energy generation as a pillar of sustainable self-consumption through electric and hydrogen recharging stations will be aimed at ships and land vehicles. The project will mean a reduction in emissions of around 65% and a reduction in the cost of supplying hydrogen by at least 25%, taking into account similar solutions.
According to Carlos Rubio, President of the Port Authority “the port facility has an interesting location and modern and safe infrastructures that add value to its choice as a beacon for renewable energies”.
Characteristics and development of the project
For his part, the President of Buran Energy Ramón Carrasco highlighted the innovative nature of the project “by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with the production of hydrogen from renewable sources in a multimodal node with the presence of different modes of transport and public networks of energy”.
The pilot plant for this project will be built at the Buran Energy facilities in the Port of Malaga. It will be here from where the energy generation, storage and supply operations are carried out, which will be housed in containers to minimize the space used and facilitate their transport: an ideal model for small-scale projects.
The DH2 Green Consortium and the Málaga Puerto Verde initiative
The proposal submitted to this call has been prepared by the consortium made up of the Malaga Port Authority and Buran Energy as main promoters, and with the participation of different national and European companies and centers:
- H2B2, as manufacturers of electrolyzers.
- The Polytechnic University of Madrid, through the Agustín Betancourt Foundation, as advisers and technical support.
- Azcatec, Emdelen (France), McValnera and Riverlake Solutions (Holland), as technical management companies for the project.
- RQuantech (Switzerland), as a company specialized in artificial intelligence.
- Hispano Aeronáutica, which will take care of the transfer to other sectors.
- Málagaport, as the organism in charge of the diffusion and dissemination.
- Valoriza Servicios Medioambientales and Oil Distribution Terminals (ODT) as end users of the project.
This project is included in the Puerto Verde initiative, which the Port Authority has been promoting since 2019 and which channels all actions related to the sustainability of the site. The three main lines of action of this initiative are the construction of cogeneration facilities through the use of renewable energies, the reduction of carbon emissions into the atmosphere through less use of fossil fuels and the implementation of spaces and tree barriers in various port locations.
